Spring is on the way, but there are still a few nights expected to hit below freezing. I’m tired of waiting (I’ve been tired of waiting since February 1!), so let’s get started with a personal salad patch made from a leftover takeout container.
What you’ll need:
- Seeds – I went with spinach, but any greens will do
- A takeout container made of plastic, at least 1.5 inches deep. This is a Bob Evans takeout container for reference. If it has it’s own, clear lid that’s even better because you can make it into a little greenhouse.
- Seed starting potting mix.
- Compost – if using. You can also fill the whole thing with potting soil if you prefer. I live on a farm… I have a lot of compost.
- Water
If using compost, sift through it to remove any unwanted debris. Pour the seed starting mix into a bucket and moisten. Stir it around to make sure it is properly wet, adding water if necessary. You should be able to squeeze it and it keep it’s shape. Fill the takeout container 3/4 full either with the compost or seed starting mix. With your finger or any tool, make row indents about 1.5 inches apart. Place seeds along rows about an inch apart (or more depending on what kind of seeds using). Cover the rows with the seed starting potting mix, tap the dirt down, and give the seeds a little drink. Keep track of the moisture of the dirt to make sure it doesn’t dry out or become too over watered. Soon you’ll have greens sprouting and growing into a nice salad.
