I’m not talking about the new baby lemons growing on my lemon tree and looking absolutely adorable as I impatiently wait the multiple months it will take for them to mature.
No, I’m talking about this:

Some backstory:
I noticed a lot of aphids on my lemon tree, which I plan to post about next week. I bought an organic neem oil based spray and one round got rid of them. Two weeks later, once the temperatures warmed up, I noticed a lot of ants on my lemon. Now, I’ve had ants on my lemon tree before, but that was when I, also, have had aphids on it. At first, I decided to wait to see if they were actually causing any damage or not.
They were.
At the same time, I noticed these things. I don’t know if they appeared on their own or if the ants put them there. I’m wanting to guess that the ants put them there. Either way, the ants are tending/guarding them constantly. I’ve sprayed the tree, but the spray will only kill ants if it covers them and won’t ward off new ones from climbing on.
Are these growths? Bugs? Egg cases?
Anyone with an idea, please help!
